سنمار رجل رومي بنى قصر الخورنق بظهر الكوفة للنعمان بن امرئ القيس كي يستضيف فيه ابن ملك الفرس، الذي أرسله أبوه إلى الحيرة، والتي اشتهرت بطيب هوائها، وذلك لينشأ بين العرب ويتعلم الفروسية، وعندما أتم بناءه، وقف سنمار والنعمان على سطح القصر، فقال النعمان له: هل هناك قصر مثل هذا القصر؟، فأجاب كلا، ثم قال: هل هناك بناء غيرك يستطيع أن يبني مثل هذا القصر؟، قال: كلا، ثم قال سنمار مفتخرا: ألا تعلم أيها الأمير أن هذا القصر يرتكز على حجر واحد، وإذا أزيل هذا الحجر فإن القصر سينهدم، فقال: وهل غيرك يعلم موضع هذا الحجر؟، قال: كلا، فألقاه النعمان عن سطح القصر، فخر ميتا، وإنما فعل ذلك لئلا يبني مثله لغيره، فضربت العرب به المثل بمن يجزى بالإحسان الإساءة.
