روى عن الامام الإمام أحمد بن حنبل، حينما كان مسجوناً في محنة "خلق القرآن" سأله السجان عن الأحاديث التي وردت في أعوان الظلمة، فقال له: الأحاديث صحيحة، فقال له: هل أنا من أعوان الظلمة؟ فقال له: لا، لست من أعوان الظلمة، إنما أعوان الظلمة من يخيطوا لك ثوبك، من يطهو لك طعامك، من يساعدك في كذا، أما أنت فمن الظلمة أنفسهم!
