وصل البرتغاليون إلى هذه جزر عام ۹۱۳ في محاولتهم لتطويق ابعالم الإسلامي، وقد تمكنت القوة البرتغالية من احتلال الجزر، وفرضت سيطرتها على السكان، وحاولت التأثير على عقيدتهم ولكنها فشلت فشلا ذریعا في ذلك مع أنها ارتكبت أبشع الجرائم الإرهاب بحق السكان، وبقي البرتغاليون ما يقرب من القرن في هذه الجزر .
