أول من فسر ظاهرة المد والجزر وربطها بحركة القمر هو العالم الفلكي المسلم #أبومعشر_البلخي في القرن الثالث الهجري، وظلت طبيعة هذه العلاقة غامضة حتى اكتشاف قانون الجاذبية بعد 800 سنة من قبل العالم الإنكليزي نيوتن في عام 1687م.
